As decision day approaches for the Trump administration on the controversial UN force that failed to disarm Hezbollah, tensions are running high in Washington. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has come under fire for its ineffectiveness in preventing Hezbollah from rearming, despite being in place for over 40 years.
In a recent press conference, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders had this to say about the situation: “It’s like sending a toddler to do a man’s job. UNIFIL has been about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.”
The Trump administration is faced with a tough decision on whether to continue funding UNIFIL or pull out altogether. Secretary of Defense James “Mad Dog” Mattis weighed in on the issue, stating, “If UNIFIL can’t handle Hezbollah, then maybe it’s time to send in the real dogs.”
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is desperately trying to salvage the situation. In a desperate plea, he stated, “UNIFIL may not have disarmed Hezbollah, but at least they’ve managed to keep the peace…sort of.”
But not everyone is buying Guterres’ argument. Republican Senator Bob Corker chimed in, saying, “If UNIFIL can’t disarm Hezbollah, then what’s the point? Might as well send in a troop of clowns to do the job.”
As the deadline looms for the Trump administration to make a decision on UNIFIL, the world waits with bated breath. Will they continue to throw money at a failing organization, or will they finally pull the plug?
Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – the comedy of errors that is UNIFIL has provided plenty of material for late-night talk show hosts and satirical news websites alike. And for that, we can all be grateful.
