Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is on a mission to reach 3,000 career strikeouts, but his quest serves as a stark reminder that longevity on the mound is becoming a rare commodity in today’s game. The 33-year-old lefty is currently sitting at 2,710 strikeouts, and with each K he racks up, fans can’t help but wonder if he’ll be able to buck the trend of short-lived careers in baseball.
In a recent press conference, Kershaw expressed his determination to reach the milestone, saying, “I may not throw as hard as I used to, but I’ve still got plenty of tricks up my sleeve. Plus, I’ve been perfecting my ‘dad bod’ pitch – it’s unhittable.”
However, not everyone is convinced that Kershaw will be able to reach his goal. Former MLB pitcher Randy Johnson, who amassed 4,875 strikeouts in his career, chimed in with a sarcastic comment, saying, “Good luck to Clayton. He’s a great pitcher, but he’s no Randy ‘The Big Unit’ Johnson. I mean, have you seen my mullet? That thing was worth at least 500 strikeouts on its own.”
Even Kershaw’s teammates have mixed feelings about his quest for 3,000 strikeouts. Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts joked, “I told Clayton he should just start throwing underhand – it’s a lot easier on the arm. But then again, who am I to give advice? I’m just out here trying to hit dingers.”
As Kershaw continues to climb the all-time strikeouts list, he faces stiff competition from the likes of Justin Verlander, who is just 100 strikeouts behind him. Verlander, known for his intense workout regimen and fiery competitiveness, issued a playful challenge to Kershaw, saying, “I may be older, but I’ve still got plenty of gas left in the tank. Let’s see who can strike out more batters – loser has to buy the other a lifetime supply of sunscreen for those sun-drenched day games.”
